Patriarch of Alexandria in Halkidiki

    Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa departed from Alexandria in the early hours of Friday 9th September 2005 for Athens, accompanied by Gennadios Stantzios, Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate, in order to go to Porto Kofto in Halkidiki to conduct the one year memorial service for the late Patriarch Petrol and his entourage.

The Patriarch was seen off at the airport in Alexandria by the Archimandrite Gabriel Raftopoulos, Patriarchal Vicar in Alexandria and Archimandrites Savvas Heimonettos the Financial Manager, the Great Ecclesiarch Spyridon Miliotis and the Manager of the Patriarchs Private Office Markos Theodosis.

The Alexandrian Primate arrived at the Eleftherios Venizelos Airport in Athens where he was welcomed by his representative in Athens, the Elder Petrol of Aksum, the Reverend Protopresbyter Stephanos Avramides General Secretary of the Synodal Council for Inter-Orthodox and Inter-Christian relations, representing Christodoulos Archbishop of Athens and the First Counselor of the Embassy of Egypt in Athens. Protopresbyter Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Lagoumtzis from the Navy was added to the Patriarchs entourage for Thessaloniki.

At the Makedonia Airport in Thessaloniki on the same day, the Alexandrian Primate was welcomed by Prokopios of Nea Krini, Nikodimos of Kassandria,Dimitrios of Irenopolis and Panteleimon of Theopolis. Also there were the Central Chief of the Airport of Thessaloniki Mr Kostas Tenekes, the Mayor of Toronis, Professors of the Theological Faculties of the University of Thessaloniki, Representatives of Missionary Brotherhoods and Associations, Monks, Nuns and representatives of the military and judicial authorities, many businessmen and reporters from Northern Greece.

On the way to Ouranopolis the Patriarch stopped and visited the Holy Metropolis of Ierissos in Arnea, where he was welcomed by Nikodimos, the staff and colleagues of the Holy Metropolis. Addresses were made and gifts exchanged.

At noon in Ouranopolis the Ambassador of Greece in Cairo, Mr Panagiotis Vlassopoulos received the Patriarch at the hotel where he was staying with his entourage and together with his wife then hosted an official lunch at their holiday home on the picturesque island of Ammouliani.

That night, the well-known businessman and close friend colleague of Patriarch Theodoros II, Mr Anestis Arnopoulos, hosted an official dinner in honour of the Patriarch which was attended also by local authorities, many clergy and Hierarchs.

Pole and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa goes to Agion Oros

Early on the morning of Saturday 10th September, Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, escorted by a strong police presence and by craft belonging to the Port Authorities went to Agion Oros (Mount Athos) from the Port in Ouranopolis.

In Daphne, representatives from the Holy Monasteries and the Deputy Civil Commissioner of Agion Oros, Mr Aristo Kasmiroglou, welcomed the Patriarch and immediately, the procession which had formed, departed for the Protaton.

The Chief Supervisor, Fr Pavlos, and the entire Holy Community together with the representatives of all the Holy Monasteries and Cells, the Civil Authorities of the Athonite State, welcomed the Primate of the Alexandrian Church with Byzantine grandeur. Present were Irenaios of Cydonia and Apokoronos and Nikodimos of Ierissos.

The Patriarch officiated at the Doxology. The Chief Supervisor warmly welcomed the Alexandrian Primate and defined him as a man of love and Mission, expressing the joy of the monks and Fathers at the patriarchal visit.

Visibly moved, the Patriarch replied and expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome, speaking of his first visit to the Holy Mountain in 1974 and his first communication with the ascetic fathers.

The usual hospitality and photographs followed at the offices and the reception room of the Holy Community, where addresses were made again and gifts exchanged. The Patriarch gave the Chief Supervisor a Blessing Cross and the Deputy Civil Commissioner an icon of the Apostle Mark. Following a brief conducted tour of Pyrgos (small museum) an official lunch was hosted by the Holy Community in honour of the Patriarch and his entourage.

The Patriarch then visited the Cell of the Bourazerides where he was welcomed with spontaneous joy by the elders and monks.

At the Holy Monastery of Iviron especially moving moments were felt Hegoumen Archimandrite Vasilios Gondikakis spoke of the great work of the Missionary Patriarch. The Patriarch then went to the Chapel where the miraculous Icon of the Holy Virgin Portaitissa is kept and prayed for the missionary work of Africa.

At the Megistis Lavras Monastery hundreds of visiting pilgrims and many monks and priests from the surrounding cells welcomed the Patriarch of Alexandria with all due formality. In his address following the Doxology the Hegoumen Archimandrite Prodromos spoke of the long friendship and close spiritual relations between himself and the Patriarch.

He spoke of the work being done at the Patriarchate of Alexandria and defined the Patriarch as a man of prayer, quiet spiritual strength and a man of missions and love

In his reply, a visibly moved Patriarch spoke from the heart following his written speech with tears in his eyes and thanked the Elder Hegumen and the Fathers for their love and support when he visited them as a humble Missionary Bishop asking for their assistance.

The usual hospitality and exchange of gifts followed at the reception room of the Monastery as well as a veneration at the tomb of St Athanasios the Athonite.

Late that evening, after completing his visit to the Megisits Lavras Monastery the Primate of the Alexandrian Throne departed from Daphne and accompanied by a strong security presence of the Port Authorities, he went to Ouranopolis where he had meetings at his hotel until midnight with representatives of Missionary Associations and Agents from Thessaloniki and Northern Greece. With Monks and Nuns, Priests and reporters, to whom he spoke of the Missions.

The entire visit and pilgrimage of the Patriarch to the Athonite State, despite being unofficial was defined the Athonite Fathers as a very beneficial and significant presence and expression of love by the Alexandrian Primate as he is well-known to all for his great and multifaceted work in the depths of the Missions in the jungles of Africa. So, Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II was defined as a Patriarch of Mission and the spontaneous shows of honour and remembrance to his person were expressive.

The Patriarch especially referred to the close relations and common paths he had with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. He mentioned the great and radiant person of Bartholomaios, the Ecumenical Patriarch whom he thanked and referred to, in the Church of the Protaton during his official address, as beloved and dear brother.

The Patriarch of Alexandria in Sykia and Porto Koufo

Early on Sunday morning 11th September 2005, Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa and his entourage arrived at the Holy Church of St Athanasios Sykias in Halkidiki, where many faithful, associations in traditional dress, schools with flags, clergy, minks and nuns, Nikodimos of Kassandria, Chrysostomos of Zakynthos, Elder Petros of Aksum, Dimitrios of Irenopolis, Ioakeim of Zambia, Ignatios of Madagascar, welcomed him at the entrance to the Church.

The Patriarch officiated at the Divine Liturgy which was attended by faithful from Thessaloniki, Northern Greece and the Theological Faculties, all of whom had arrived in many busses.

Following the Divine Liturgy the Local Metropolitan Nikodimos welcomed the Patriarch and gave him a set of a stole and omoforion and the Parish Priest Archimandrite Photios gave the Dikero-Trikero to the Patriarch that he may give the light of Christ to Africa.

The Primate of the Alexandrian Church thanked everyone and spoke of the contribution of all the tragic victims of the accident and their love for the Throne of the Apostle Mark. He called on all to pray for their repose next to God and called on all to become continuers and mimickers of the work of their Missionary zeal.

Then, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Panayiotis Skandalakis and the former Ministers Mr Stelios Papathemelis and Christos Pachtas, Mayors, Governors, Generals, Admirals and many other officials from the Area, and Northern Greece, he conducted the one year memorial for the late Patriarch Petros VII and the members of his entourage.

All the officials boarded a naval vessel and, escorted by many private craft they went far out into the sea of Sithonia to the point where the helicopter crashed, where he conducted the Trisagion and threw wreaths in honour and memory.

At noon, the Mayor of Toronis and the Municipal Council hosted an official lunch in honour of the Patriarch and named him an honourary citizen of the province giving him the golden key of the town.

Patriarch Theodoros II thanked him and gave the Municipal Council an icon of St Athanasios and a silver tray with the emblem of the Patriarchate.

He spoke with tear-filled eyes and praised the martyred Patriarch Petros VII and the members of his entourage, both clergy and laity.

Speaking to the reporters he stressed the great humanistic work of the missions which is going on in the African Continent and called on all to contribute to this in all possible ways. He invited clergy and laity to come forward and help the works of the Missions and spoke of a re-organization of the work of the Patriarchate in the 54 countries of the vast African Continent.

On Sunday evening the Patriarch departed for Athens via the Makedonia Airport in Thessaloniki. In the Formal Lounge at the Airport he had brief discussions with His Excellency the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Euripides Stylianides and with other agents of the area. Patriarch Theodoros II was seen off from the Makedonia Airport by Nikodimos of Kassandria, the Central Airport Official, Clergy and Monks as well as representatives from Missionary Societies.

Pole and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa in Athens

Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa met with the Mayor of Athens Mrs Dora Bakoyiannis at the Mayoral Chambers on Monday 12th September 2005. His Beatitude and his entourage were welcomed at the entrance by the Deputy Mayor of Athens Mr Theodoros Skylakakis, the Chairman of the Municipal Council Mr Behrakis, the Deputy Mayor Mrs Kelly Bourdara, many Municipal Counselors and other officials and colleagues of the Municipality.

The meeting between the Patriarch and the Mayor was cordial and many issues were discussed regarding the Patriarchate of Alexandria and its future auspicious progress on the African continent.

The Mayor Mrs Dora Bakoyiannis referred to the particular relations and her family and personal friendship with the Alexandrian Primate which has been a lengthy one due to their Cretan heritage. She defined the Patriarch as ''...a man of Mission and serene activities as is well-known in Orthodoxy and it is what we all need to see today with the many problems we have to face and she promised always, from whichever position she may hold, to be beside the Patriarch and the Patriarchate of Alexandria...'' She gave a commemorative gift to the Patriarch and during his private meeting with the Mayor he gave her a silver tray with the emblem of the Patriarchate and an Egyptian decorated tray for her office. He was then taken on a conducted tour of the Mayoral offices to see the famous miniatures of the Mayors and then departed.

Patriarch of Alexandria visits Konstantinos Mitsotakis

Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa visited the former Prime Minister Mr. Konstantinos Mitsotakis late on the afternoon of 14th September 2005. Visibly moved, the former Prime Minister and his colleagues waited for the Patriarch at the entrance to his office.

He emotionally greeted the ''...Cretan Patriarch Theodoros...'', as he called him; a meeting followed in Mr. Mitsotakis' office. Mr Mitsotakis said that it is ''...a particular honour for him and his colleagues that the Patriarch of Alexandria should be visiting this office...''.

He expressed his joy and his gratitude for the progress of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and stressed the fact that all politicians in Greece appreciate and feel a liking for the Patriarch and the manner in which he quietly and with discernment goes about his work.

The Patriarch's programme regarding the operation of the Patriarchal School of Alexandria was mentioned, as were other issues and the former Prime Minister expressed his unreserved support. ''I will always be there for you and all will go well, do not worry'', he said characteristically shortly before His Beatitude's departure from his office.

The Patriarch then visited Mr Ioannis Michael, who works on the periodical ''Pantainos'' who is in the Intensive Care Unit of the ''Alexandra'' Hospital and spoke with both him and his wife. He wished a speedy recovery and the blessing of the Apostle Mark to the tireless colleague of the Patriarchal Office in Athens.

The Patriarch of Alexandria in his Athens office and the meetings held

Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa had many and consecutive meetings in the Patriarchal Office in Athens on Tuesday 13th September 2005.

He received the Ambassador of Greece to Zimbabwe Mr Alexandrakis, the Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr George Philippaios, the Executive Council of the Order of Constantine the Great, the Family of the late Patriarch Petros, University Professors, Jonah of Kampala and All Uganda, Porphyrios of Thebaid, Damaskinos of Diavleia and Petros of Nikopolis, Clergy of the Church of Greece and many other colleagues and friends of the Patriarchate.

Later, the Patriarch, accompanied by Elder Petros of Aksum his representative in Athens, and the Archimandrite Gennadios Stantzios Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod, as well the Chairmen of the Hellenes from Egypt Mr Philip Kossenas, the Hellenic Community of Alexandria Mr Haralambos Katsimbris and the Association of Helleno-Egyptian Friendship Mr Spyridon Kamalakis, went to the home of the new Ambassador of Egypt in Athens Mr Hamdi Sanad Loza, where the Ambassador, who will be giving his credentials to the President of the Republic on Thursday 15th September 2005, hosted an official lunch in honour of the Primate of the Alexandrian Throne and his entourage.

At the lunch toasts were proposed and gifts exchanged. The Patriarch spoke warmly about the newly re-elected President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Mr Mohamed Hosni Mubarak and the hospitable and peaceful land of Egypt which aids the existence and operation of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria in many ways. He proposed a toast for happiness in his new term of office and that he will lead the calm and progress-loving people of Egypt to success and prosperity. He also wished the new Ambassador every happiness and strength in his important duties and his mission.

In his turn, the Ambassador of Egypt expressed his particular joy and contentment at the presence of the Patriarch in the Ambassadorial residence of Egypt. He mentioned that he is aware of the work and the heavy programme of activities of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate and follows its progress with interest. He also stressed the fact that the Government of Egypt and particularly the Governor of Alexandria whom he knows has close ties of friendship with the Patriarch, will always remain beside the Patriarchate in the broader framework of the traditional friendship and cooperation of the two countries of Egypt and Greece. He also said that the presence of the Patriarch is a great blessing and joy for him, his family and his close colleagues and the Egyptian Government. The God of love, peace and justice will be with us and will help the Egyptian people, stressed the Ambassador. Accompanied by a very strong police presence, the Patriarch and his entourage left the Ambassadorial Residence late in the afternoon.

The Patriarch of Alexandria visits Monastery Gargittou

Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa on the day of the Feast of the Elevation of the Precious Cross, 14th September, officiated at the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Monastery of St Nektarios in Gargittos.

After the Divine Liturgy he warmly addressed the faithful regarding the meaning of the great Feast of the Precious Cross and handed out the antidoron.

A reception followed in the reception hall of the Holy Monastery attended by the Mayor of Gerakas, Municipal Counselors and officials from the area.

At noon, following the lunch at the Holy Monastery of St Nektarios Gargittos the Patriarch went to the Prisons of Korydallos accompanied by Archimandrite Gennadios Stantzios, the Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod and Protopresbyter Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Lagoumtzis of the Navy, to visit two Egyptians who are incarcerated there. He met the Director and the officials of the Prison Management and the staff of the Establishment.
