Cyprus PIO: Foreign trade statistics for January-August, 1996 (96-11-23)

The Department of Statistics and Research announces that it prepared foreign trade statistics in summary form for the period January-August, 1996.

The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period under review were:

(a) Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) rose by 10,8% to #1.226,3 mn as compared with #1.106,3 mn in January-August, 1995.

(b) Imports for home consumption increased by 7,1% to reach #959,3 mn from #895,3 mn in January-August, 1995.

(c) The E.U. countries supplied goods valued at #596,8 mn or 48,7% of the total imports as compared with #569,8 mn or 51,5% during January-August, 1995.

(d) Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption during January-August, 1996, were #395,6 mn or 41,2% as against #379,0 mn or 42,3% in January-August, 1995, followed by consumer goods with #207,0 mn or 21,6% as against #187,4 mn or 20,9%; transport equipment amounted to #114,3 mn or 11,9% compared to #119,2 mn or 13,3% and capital goods accounted for #109,5 mn or 11,4% as compared with #101,2 mn or 11,3% in January-August, 1995.

(e) Total exports increased to #436,7 mn as compared with #354,1 mn in January-August, 1995.

(f) Domestic exports including shipstores, amounted to #164,1 mn in January-August, 1996 in comparison with #169,4 mn in January-August, 1995 whilst re-exports including shipstores, rose sharply to #272,6 mn from #184,7 mn in January-August, 1995.

(g) The E.U. countries absorbed 59,8% or #95,8 mn of Cyprus domestic exports excluding shipstores, followed by the Arab countries with a share of 17,9% or #28,8 mn. The corresponding shares of the E.U. countries and the Arab countries for January-August, 1995 were 64,0% and 15,5% respectively.

(h) Industrial products of domestic produce exported (excluding shipstores) during January-August, 1996, accounted for 67,7% or #108,5 mn as compared with 64,3% or #106,6 mn, with clothing and footwear accounting for #24,9 mn and #3,4 mn respectively, whilst exports of clothing during January-August, 1995 amounted to #29,4 mn and of footwear to #3,6 mn. Exports of agricultural products were #51,2 mn in January-August, 1996 and #58,7 mn in January-August, 1995 with potatoes accounting for #31,0 mn compared to #39,8 mn and citrus fruit for #14,1 mn compared to #13,0 mn in January-August, 1995.
