1. The Department of Statistics and Research announces that it has published the annual report "Tourism, Migration and Travel Statistics" for 1995. The report provides detailed data on the movement of travellers and the tourist flow.

2. The main development in the movement of travellers and tourism in 1995 compared to 1994 are:

Travellers

In 1995 the movement of travellers to and from Cyprus recorded an increase compared to 1994. Total arrivals increased by 3,8% to 2.685.321. Departures increased also by 3,8% to 2.681.438.

Visitors

Arrivals of visitors increased by 1,7% compared to 1994 and reached 2.253.400 in 1995.

Tourists arrivals recorded an increase of 1,5% in 1995 over 1994 and reached 2.100.000. Europe has as usual been the traditional tourist market for Cyprus. In 1995 European countries provided the Island with more than 86% of the total tourist arrivals.

The United Kingdom remained the most important source of tourism with a share of 40,5% of the total, followed by Germany with 11,2% Switzerland with 5,2%. Sweden with 4,7% Russia with 4,5% and Greece with 3,1%.

The number of excursionists, visitors who did not stay overnight in the country, recorded an increase of 4,3% and reached 153.400 in 1995.

Residents

In 1995 the number of Cypriots and foreigners residents of Cyprus departing for a visit abroad was estimated at 360.000 compared to 312.000 in 1994.

Tourist Accommodation

At the end of 1995 there were in operation 2.480 tourist accommodation units registered by the Cyprus Tourism Organization with a total capacity of 78.427 beds. Of these units 229 were hotels with stars, 276 hotel apartments, 1 tourist village, 1641 tourist apartments, 4 complexes of tourist villas, 12 hotels without star, 17 guesthouses, 298 furnished apartments and 2 accommodation units in traditional buildings.

Overnight stays

During 1994, 14,5 million overnight stays were recorded in all tourist accommodation units showing a decrease of 0,9% over the previous year. Tourists accounted for 14,2 million or 97,6% of all overnight stays.
