    [01] Germany's Special Envoy visits Cyprus

    The President of the Republic Mr Tassos Papadopoulos received yesterday Germany's Special Envoy for Cyprus Mr Peter Witting. In statements to the press after the meeting the German envoy said that his presence in Cyprus clearly demonstrates Germany /s interest in the solution of the Cyprus problem. Referring to his meeting with the President he said he had an interesting talk with President Papadopoulos, who briefed him on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem. Mr Witting said that prior to his visit to Cyprus he was in Ankara in preparation for the forthcoming visits of the Chancellor and the Foreign Minister to Turkey. The German official noted that this coming year is a very decisive one for the Eastern Mediterranean as well as for EU - Turkey relations.

    [02] Cyprus's first Ambassador to Hungary presents credentials

    The first Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Hungary, Mr George Shiakallis, presented his credentials on 12 January 2004 to the President of Hungary Mr Ferenc Madl. Presenting his credentials at an official ceremony at the Hungarian Presidential Palace, Mr Shiakallis promised that he would work for further promoting and enhancing relations between Cyprus and Hungary, utilizing, in this direction, all the opportunities offered to the two countries by their accession to the European Union. The Cyprus Ambassador also conveyed the Cyprus Government's appreciation for Hungary's continued support in the effort to achieve a just, viable and workable solution to the Cyprus problem. Receiving the credentials, the Hungarian President praised the high level of bilateral relations and expressed the certainty that the accession of the two countries to the European Union would offer new opportunities for strengthening them further. Mr Madl reassured that Hungary would continue to support Cyprus in its efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem and expressed the hope that the solution would be found before 1 May 2004, so that a reunited Cyprus would accede to the European Union. Concluding, the Hungarian President made a special reference to the financial and commercial aspect of bilateral relations, stressing that Hungary places particular emphasis to their further development and strengthening.
