The President of the Republic, Mr. Tassos Papadopoulos, sent on Wednesday, a letter of condolences to the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan, regarding the attack against the UN Headquarters in Baghdad. The President/s letter reads as follows: "It was with great shock and distress that I was informed of the attack on United Nations Headquarters in Iraq and the loss of so many lives including that of your Special Representative, close associate and dear friend, Mr. Sergio Vieira de Mello. On behalf of the Government and people of Cyprus, please accept Excellency, our most sincere and heartfelt condolences. This cowardly attack must not be allowed to divert the efforts of the United Nations and of the international community from its mission of assisting the Iraqi people in their quest for rebuilding their shuttered country. The United Nations, in this difficult time, must persevere and continue its noble endeavor. Let me assure you of our full and unwavering support in these trying times". The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement yesterday, also condemned the bomb attack against the UN headquarters in Baghdad and expressed its deep regret for the victims, including UN Secretary-General's Special Representative to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. "The Foreign Ministry believes that such actions should not be allowed to influence the humanitarian work and reconstruction of Iraq which must continue despite these adverse conditions", the statement said. Cyprushas repeatedly declared that it remains committed in the fight against this irksome phenomenon", added the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Violence and terrorism must not hinder the peace process and the full implementation of the Road Map, which offers the best alternative to final settlement in the Middle East", the Ministry added.
