[02] US Senate Committee supports Cyprus' EU accessionThe US Senate External Relations Committee has adopted a resolution that supports Cyprus' accession to the European Union. The resolution, introduced by Senator Olympia Snowe and co-sponsored by Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joseph Biden, recognises that "security, reconciliation and prosperity for all Cypriots can be best achieved within the context of membership of the European Union…" It adds that "the accession of Cyprus to the European Union could act as a further catalyst for the solution of the Cyprus problem without the latter being a pre-condition for accession" and recommends that "membership of the Republic of Cyprus in the European Union should be strongly supported." It also expresses strong support for the reunification of Cyprus, stating that "the current status quo on Cyprus must be ended and that island and its people be reunited, in a bizonal, bicommunal federal Cyprus, with full consideration of United Nations Security Council resolutions and international treaties." Furthermore, it recognises that "resolution of the Cyprus problem is also consistent with American values" and that "reunification of Cyprus remains a desirable (US) foreign policy objective." The resolution, which is similar to the one adopted recently by the Subcommittee for Europe of the US House of Representatives, will now be considered by the Full Senate.
