[01] Mr Cem's letter to the 15 found no response
The letter of the Turkish Foreign Minister Mr Cem to the 15 Foreign
Ministers of the European Union, on the Cyprus problem, found no response
and was not even a subject for discussion the Deputy Foreign Minister of
Greece, Mr Tasos Yiannitsis, has said.
Speaking after the conclusion of the informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs
Ministers of the EU member states at Caceres, Spain Mr Yiannitsis said:
"There was just a mention of the existence of the letter and in my opinion
in a climate especially negative." Commenting on the content of the letter,
Mr Yiannitsis said that all that the letter does is to repeat the well-
known positions of the Turks. The fact that the letter was sent at the time
when the talks are in process is not a correct move of the part of Turkey,
he added. Mr Yiannitsis also underlined that the talks process must be left
to proceed, to show where it can lead without any interference of any kind.
The two sides must be left to sit down and find a settlement without such
interventions, he said.
Regarding the relations between Turkey and the European Union Mr Yiannitsis
said that there was a clear reference to the fact that Turkey must proceed
in the direction of fulfilling the Copenhagen criteria, which include human
rights, laws and freedoms, contribution towards finding a solution of the
Cyprus problem as well towards finding solutions to the issues that involve
Greece.
[02] Foreign Minister departs for Constantinople
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Ioannis Kasoulides heading a delegation,
left for Constantinople on Sunday evening, where he will represent Cyprus
in the joint forum of the Organisation of Islamic Conference and the
European Union.
The Foreign Ministers of the Member countries, the observer countries and
the candidate countries of the two organisations, as well as intellectuals,
academics, and authors, will participate at the Constantinople forum.
Mr Kasoulides will be returning to Cyprus on Wednesday 13 February
2002.
