[01] Hungarian officials stress their country's support for Cyprus

Hungary supports a solution of the Cyprus problem based on the relevant UN resolutions, which provide for a bizonal bicommunal federation with a single sovereignty, a single international personality and a single citizenship. Moreover, it supports the conclusions of the European Council at Helsinki, according to which a solution of the Cyprus problem is not a precondition for the island's accession to the European Union.

Hungarian officials expressed the above positions during their meetings last week with a delegation of the Cyprus House of Representatives, which visited Hungary at the invitation of the Hungarian National Assembly.

The Hungarian officials said they look forward to Cyprus' EU accession, which will be in the interest of both Greek and Turkish Cypriots and expressed satisfaction with the level of relations between Cyprus and Hungary.

The Head of the Cypriot delegation, President of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee Mr Nicos Anastasiades, expressed gratitude for Hungary's stable support in the island's efforts to reach a political settlement and accede to the European Union.

He stressed that the lack of progress for a Cyprus settlement was exclusively due to the intransigent stance of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and expressed hope that, in view of Cyprus' accession to the EU, the Turkish side will abandon its unacceptable positions. He also underlined the importance of contacts between the two communities in Cyprus, which are, however, systematically impeded by Mr Denktash.
