Mr. Glafcos Clerides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, H.E. Mr. Rauf Denktash, have now agreed to meet in Cyprus on 4 December 2001. Alvaro de Soto, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, will be present at the meeting. The Secretary-General hopes this meeting will move the process forward."[02] US in favour of UN Secretary General's good offices missionThe President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides had a meeting yesterday with the US Ambassador to Cyprus Mr Donald K. Bandler.Replying to questions after the meeting, Mr Bandler said that with President Clerides they reviewed the President's visit to the United States and the latest developments in the Cyprus problem. Moreover he said that they exchanged views on the forthcoming meeting between President Clerides and Mr Denktash, which was the focus of today's meeting. The US Ambassador expressed his support for the United Nations Secretary General's Good Offices Mission and for the efforts to negotiate a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem. Furthermore, he said he considered the forthcoming meeting as part of the efforts of the Secretary General. [03] Syrian President reaffirms his country's consistent and constant support for CyprusThe President of Syria Mr Bashar Al-Assad reaffirmed his country's consistent and constant support for a settlement of the Cyprus problem, based on the principles of international law, the UN Charter, the United Nations Security Council resolutions and the friendly relations that exist between the two countries, during a meeting he had yesterday with Dr Vasos Lyssarides, who is visiting Syria as Special Envoy of the President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides.During the meeting, Dr Lyssarides handed the Syrian President a written message by President Clerides and briefed him on the latest developments of the Cyprus problem and the island's European Union accession course. [04] President of the House of Representatives in Finland for talksThe President of the House of Representatives Mr Demetris Christofias, who is in Finland on an official visit at the invitation of the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament, was received yesterday by the President of Finland, Mrs Tarja Halonen.During the meeting, the Finnish President stressed, inter alia, that even if the Cyprus problem were not resolved before the time of Cyprus' accession to the European Union, Cyprus would accede to the EU, noting that Cyprus is not the only example of a divided country, member of the European Union. However, Mrs Halonen also underlined that Cyprus should continue to work hard for the EU accession negotiations and to demonstrate all its good will in the efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem. During his visit to Finland, Mr Christofias also had separate meetings with the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament Mrs Rita Uosukainen, with the first Deputy Speaker Mrs Sirkka- Liisa Anttila, with members and the Chairman of the Grand Committee Mr Esko Aho, with the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Mrs Liisa Jaakonsaari and with members and the Chairman of the Committee for the Future Mr Martti Tiuri. The Speaker of the Finnish Parliament Mrs Rita Uosukainen expressed support for the Cyprus' efforts to find a solution to its political problem and underlined that Cyprus holds a special place in her heart and in the hearts of the people of Finland. During his stay in Finland, Mr Christofias also had meetings with Finland's Under Secretary of State Mr Jaakko Laajava and the Ambassador in charge of Cyprus in the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr Pekka Korvenheimo.
