[01] Cyprus Government sends condolences to the President of the United States

The Acting President of the Republic, President of the House of Representatives Mr Demetris Christofias, sent yesterday the followingtelegram to the President of the United States Mr George Bush:

"On behalf of the Government and the people of Cyprus please accept our deep condolences, sorrow and sympathy for the death of innocent civilians and the disaster caused by the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C., which we strongly condemn."

[02] Acting President expresses strong condemnation for the terrorist attacks against the US

The Acting President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias called an emergency Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace yesterday, during which the situation created by the terrorist attacks against the United States was examined as well as the security measures the Cyprus authorities would take.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Christofias strongly condemned, on behalf of the Cyprus government, the parliament and the people of Cyprus, the terrible terrorist acts against the US which resulted in killing many innocent civilians.

"The Cyprus government unreservedly denounces these actions and expresses its deep grief and sympathy to the US government and the American people," he added.

Mr Christofias said that the competent authorities in Cyprus were on alert and security measures had already been taken in Nicosia and the Republic's ports and airports.

Replying to questions regarding President Clerides' trip to New York where he was scheduled to meet the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Mr Christofias said that a Swiss Air aircraft carrying President Clerides had been diverted to Monteal, Canada.

[03] Statement by the Minister of Defence

Defence Minister Mr Socratis Hasikos stated yesterday that the reinforcement of Cyprus' defence is indispensable and aims at the prevention of a possible new Turkish offensive against the island.

Replying to a question on the Greek Cypriot side's reaction to the Turkish occupying forces' efforts to upgrade their military systems in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, Mr Hasikos said that " as President Glafcos Clerides himself has said, our side follows the whole situation and takes its own measures."

Referring to the Turkish Foreign Minister's threats, Mr Hasikos said that if Turkey attempted to materialize its threats against Cyprus, the losses for Turkey would be greater than the benefits.
