Replying to press questions on departure, President Clerides noted that he has responded positively to Mr Annan's invitation for talks and that the Turkish position is that Mr Denktash has not refused the UN invitation to talks, but has turned down the invitation for talks beginning 12 September, claiming that no common ground had been established.

Asked what he expects the United Nations to do in view of the Turkish Cypriot leader's refusal to go to New York for the talks, President Clerides said that one of the topics he would discuss with the Secretary General would be Mr Annan's future moves with regard to the UN-led peace process.

"We will be there and if Mr Denktash comes to New York, the negotiations will continue. If not, we shall consult with the Secretary General to see what should be done," President Clerides added.

The President said he would be happy to see Mr Denktash returning to the negotiating table. If however, he cannot understand that it in his interest to do so, it is then up to the UN, the Security Council and the European Union to express their views on who bears the responsibility for the lack of progress in the solution of the Cyprus problem, he said.

Asked if he is ready to discuss every single topic, the President stressed that he is ready to hold talks within the framework of the UN Security Council resolutions, the international conventions on human rights, the European Court decisions and the European Acquis Communautaire.
