[01] Highly professional ship management sector

Cyprus boasts a highly professional ship management sector, according to a five-member delegation which took part in a recent two-day French Cypriot Bilateral Maritime Meeting which was a follow-up to the first meeting of its kind held in Paris in June last year.

During their visit to Cyprus the French delegation, headed by France's Shipping and Transport Ministry permanent secretary, Mr Christian Serradji, met and exchanged views and ideas with executives of the local maritime community as well as a number of internationally operating ship management companies in Limassol and the Maritime Education School of Hanseatic.

The two sides agreed that the next meeting would be held in France next year.

This year's event dealt with key shipping issues such as the preparation of a memorandum between the Maritime Administrations of France and Cyprus through which standing procedures will be established to deal with cases of abandoned seafarers.

The conference also dealt with cooperation in the field of certification of seafarers and the implementation of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers of 1978 as amended.

Cooperation in marine accident investigation and the possible provision by France to Cyprus of technical assistance to revise the current legislation in Cyprus was also raised, as was further cooperation at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) over marine safety, prevention of pollution from ships and labour issues.

The introduction of a European vessel traffic monitoring system and its possible extension to cover the Eastern Mediterranean also came under consideration.
