Mr Anan expressed the hope that by the end of the year the two sides may be brought back to the negotiating table. [02] Russia backs the UN Secretary General's good offices mission in CyprusRussia's stance on the problem is constant and consistent and the country backs the UN Secretary General's good offices mission in Cyprus. This was stated by the Russian Special Representative for the Cyprus problem, Mr Vladimir Prygin after a meeting on Friday, 22 June 2001 with Cyprus' President Glafcos Clerides.Mr Prygin said Russia had regular contacts with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan through his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, as well as with the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council, Greece, Turkey and the two sides in Cyprus. The Russian official stated that the purpose of his visit to Cyprus was "to evaluate the current situation and its prospects" and added that his country was in favour of the resumption of the talks. Mr Prygin was also received by House President Demetris Christofias with whom he discussed latest developments in the Cyprus problem. Speaking after the meeting Mr Christofias said they had discussed the role the Parliaments of the two countries could play towards finding a viable and just solution of the Cyprus problem, and thanked the Government and the people of Russia for their consistent stand and support for the struggle of the people of Cyprus. Replying to a question, Mr Prygin said the relevant UN resolutions on Cyprus should always be the basis of the negotiations aimed at finding a solution to the problem. [03] Kasoulides addresses the 17th Annual Marathon of Love for Missing PersonsThe Cyprus government has called on the Turkish Cypriot side to cooperate in the investigations into the fate of missing persons and deal with the issue as a humanitarian one, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said on 23 June addressing the 17th Annual Marathon of Love for Missing Persons.Mr Kasoulides said the government had decided unilaterally to proceed with the exhumations after the Turkish Cypriot side had raised serious obstacles in the implementation of an agreement it had made in July 1997 with President Glafcos Clerides. The Foreign Minister added that the process had so far revealed that about 26 remains were related to cases of missing persons.
