Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 01-06-22Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Friday, 22 June 2001CONTENTS[01] Cyprus' harmonisation with the EU is running smoothlyCyprus will close all seven chapters in its negotiations for entry into the European Union by the end of the Spanish Presidency of the EU (first half of 2002), Leopold Maurer, the EU's Chief Negotiator said yesterday.Speaking at a joint press conference in Nicosia with Cyprus' Chief Negotiator for accession with the EU, George Vassiliou, Mr Maurer said that the final chapters will now be examined and should be finalised under the Spanish presidency next year. He also said that the EU will grant Cyprus financial aid to the tune of 50 million euro for the next five years in order to support the country's harmonisation process. Mr Maurer expressed his team's satisfaction with the progress made by Cyprus regarding the implementation of the acquis communautaire. "So far we have closed 22 chapters, while seven chapters still remain open", he said, adding that the harmonisation process is running smoothly. [02] Ireland supports search for a Cyprus solutionIrish Foreign Minister has said that Ireland recognises the government of the Republic of Cyprus as the only legal government of the island of Cyprus.Replying to a question submitted by Irish MP, Mrs Nora Owen, of the opposition Fine Gael party, the Minister added that the recent decision of the European Court of Human Rights in Cyprus' case against Turkey reaffirms the need for a solution to the Cyprus problem and is in line with its previous decisions on the situation in Cyprus. He said Ireland supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to find a political solution based on a bicommunal, bizonal and federal approach.
