[01] Kasoulides has talks in Finland

Cyprus' Foreign Minister, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides held talks in Helsinki yesterday with his Finnish counterpart, Mr Erkki Tuomioja, Premier Paavo Lipponen and President Tarja Halonen.

The talks centred on Cyprus' accession course for European Union membership, EU enlargement and developments in the UN-led peace effort to find a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus.

"We had a very good and cordial meeting and the focus of our conversation was our effort to join the EU and the Union's plans for a security and defence policy," Kasoulides told CNA from the Finnish capital.

Mr Kasoulides then flew to Gothenburg, Sweden to join President Clerides who leads the Cypriot delegation at the EU summit.

[02] Australia is ready to help solve the Cyprus problem

Australia is ready to help in the search for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem to the benefit of all sides.

This was stated recently by the President of Australia's Federal Parliament, Labour MP, Mr Leo McLeay.

He reiterated what various Australian Foreign Ministers have said, namely that Australia is committed to a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus dispute, as well as to supporting the peace-keeping role of the United Nations and that of conflict resolution.

He said that international law is an important element in the search for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

He called on everyone involved in the Cyprus problem to proceed within the spirit of UN Security Council resolution 1251, which envisages a state with a single sovereignty and international personality.
