[01] President Clerides meets with Lord Hannay

President Clerides, who is in London en route to Gothenburg to attend the EU summit meeting, yesterday had a one-hour meeting with Britain's Special Representative for Cyprus Lord David Hannay during which they discussed the current phase of the Cyprus problem and the possibility of resuming the talks.

Replying to questions afterwards, Lord Hannay said that a change of Foreign Secretary did not mean a change in the British government's policy on Cyprus.

He said the government's foreign policy was laid down in the Labour Party's manifesto on the basis of which the party was elected, and which contains references to everything, including the Cyprus problem.

Asked whether he envisaged that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Denktash, would return to the negotiating table, Lord Hannay replied in the affirmative.

[02] Commerce Minister says Cyprus is ideal business partner

Cyprus' Minister for Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Mr Nicos Rolandis, has said that Cyprus is committed to the creation of a healthy and constructive trading environment amongst all European Countries .

Addressing the 43rd conference of the European Trade Promotion Organisation (ETPO), which convened in Nicosia yesterday, Mr Rolandis said that, as a country on the threshold of membership to the European Union, Cyprus could undoubtedly strengthen economic relations between European Countries and countries of our area.

The island's strategic location, the close commercial and business ties it has maintained through the years, as well as its well developed infrastructure in the fields of banking, telecommunications, shipping, financial services and other, make Cyprus an ideal business partner, as does the strength and dynamism that characterises its business community.

"In fact an increasing number of businessmen from all over the world are presently using Cyprus as their base and are establishing joint ventures with the locals", he added.

Representatives from 25 countries are taking part in the conference which aims at examining ways and means to further promote trade and the role these organisations have to play in the light of globalisation.

[03] Diplomatic relations with Burkina Faso established

A protocol for establishing diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level was signed in New York yesterday between Cyprus and Burkina Faso.

Cyprus' Permanent Representative at the United Nations, Mr Sotos Zakheos, speaking at the signing ceremony, stressed that the island sets great store on the development of cooperation with African countries.

The Permanent Representative of Burkina Faso expressed appreciation for the role that Cyprus is playing internationally and the conviction that relations between the two countries will be strengthened, particularly in view of Cyprus' accession to the European Union.
