[01] European Parliament calls for immediate release of Tsiakourmas

The European Parliament yesterday called for the immediate release of Panicos Tsiakourmas and said it holds Turkey responsible for his abduction and continuing illegal detention in the occupied part of Cyprus.

In a resolution approved yesterday, the European Parliament condemns the abduction and subsequent arrest of Mr Tsiakourmas, which "constitutes a flagrant violation of international law".

It urges the government of Turkey to make all efforts so that this case can come to a positive conclusion and demands that "the local administration in the occupied area of Cyprus releases Mr Tsiakourmas immediately and without any preconditions. It also urges that Mr Tsiakourmas, who is a diabetic, be given adequate medical attention while still in detention.

The resolution also points out that there is every indication that drugs were planted on the person of Mr Tsiakourmas after his abduction, and that although the allegations of possession of drugs have not been proven, proceedings have begun in the illegal courts in the occupied area on trumped up charges.

[02] Cyprus Foreign Minister has contacts in Washington

Cyprus' Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has asked US Congressmen and committees to back the effort for a settlement in Cyprus and outlined the government positions on the issue during meetings in Washington.

Mr Kasoulides had a series of meetings with congressmen, senators and members of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee and Congress' International Relations Committee, whom he briefed on the Cyprus problem and Cyprus' EU accession course.

[03] Presentation of credentials

The new Dutch Ambassador to Cyprus, Jankheer Ronald Henry Loudon, has described as "positive" the progress Cyprus has made so far in its European Union accession process.

Presenting his credentials to President Glafcos Clerides yesterday, he said his government follows "with great interest the efforts of all parties concerned in the process, led by the UN Secretary General, to bring about a just and workable solution to the Cyprus question."

"The Netherlands government has taken an even deeper interest in the relations with Cyprus since the application of Cyprus for membership in the EU," Mr Loudon said.

President Clerides also received the credentials of the new Bangladeshi High Commissioner to Cyprus, Mr Serajul Islam.

"Bangladesh remains firmly committed to the unity of Cyprus and stands by all the relevant UN resolutions in this regard, aimed at protecting the independence, territorial integrity and reunification of Cyprus", Mr Islam said.
