The Greek Minister expressed the belief that the accession partnership should include a clear commitment by the European Union that Cyprus will become a full member as soon as negotiations concerning her are completed, and not when all candidate countries' negotiations are finished. No obstacle stemming from the situation created by the continuing Turkish occupation should hinder the island's prospects, he added. Mr Pangalos also stressed that in Turkey's accession partnership with Europe there must be a provision that the Turkish government should actively and positively contribute to a Cyprus settlement. Finally, he pointed out that all the decisions taken at the Helsinki summit must be repeated in the accession partnership in a more dynamic and specific way. [02] Cyprus and Greece sign cultural cooperation agreementThe Greek Minister of Culture Mr Theodoros Pangalos and the Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture Mr Ouranios Ioannides, signed in Nicosia yesterday on behalf of their countries, a cultural cooperation agreement and a memorandum for the years 2001-2003, in the framework of the 28th Olympiad. The memorandum provides for exchanges of cultural groups, exhibitions, and cooperation in the music and film industries, including the establishment of a common fund for co-productions. In the context of the memorandum, Cyprus will submit proposals to the competent authorities in Athens on ways in which it can contribute to the organization of the Athens Olympiad. In a statement to the press on the subject of the agreement, Mr Pangalos said that Cyprus's cultural potential would be utilised in the cultural events of the Olympics. The Greek Minister revealed that the Olympic flame would pass through Cyprus on its way to Greece and that the bronze medals for the games would be made from Cyprus copper. [03] Violations of Cyprus' airspaceThe Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Sotos Zackheos, has strongly protested to the UN against massive violations of the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus and of the flight information region of Nicosia by Turkish military aircraft, recorded in August and September 2000.In his letter addressed to the United Nations Secretary General, the Cyprus Ambassador stressed that these provocative acts, some of which took place at a time when the UN sponsored talks on Cyprus were taking place, demonstrate Turkey's blatant disregard of international law. He also expressed the hope that the necessary positive attitude would be shown by Turkey, so that the forthcoming proximity talks, which will take place in Geneva under the Secretary General's auspices, as well as all the efforts for finding a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem, will not be adversely affected.
