  • [01] Mr Alvaro de Soto meets with President Clerides

    [01]

The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative on Cyprus, Mr Alvaro de Soto had a meeting today with the President of the Republic, Mr Glafcos Clerides. Present at the meeting were the Attorney-General of the Republic Mr Alecos Markides, the Foreign Minister Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, the Government Spokesman Mr Michalis Papapetrou, the Deputy Minister to the President Mr Pantelis Kouros as well as the UN Secretary-General's Acting Special Representative in Cyprus Mr James Holger.

In a brief statement to the press after the meeting, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said that the Greek Cypriot side is ready to proceed to the third round of talks with the intention to deal with the substance of the Cyprus problem in a constructive way. He also expressed the hope that the Turkish side will come to these talks with the same attitude.

Replying to a question on whether the Greek Cypriot side is ready to discuss the issue of confederation put forward by the Turkish Cypriot side, Mr Papapetrou made it absolutely clear that the Greek Cypriot side firmly supports a solution of federation.

He pointed out that this position of federation was acceptable to the Turkish side just a few years ago and wondered why it found it unacceptable now that relations between Greece and Turkey were moving for the better.
