Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 00-03-02Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Thursday, 2 March 2000[01]The UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Mr Alvaro de Soto, has arrived on the island on a familiarisation visit.Speaking on arrival at Larnaca airport on Tuesday, the Peruvian diplomat said he came primarily and essentially to get a "general overview" of the situation on the ground and not to continue in any way the UN-led proximity talks, due to resume in New York in May. He added, however, that he would touch upon some of the substance of the talks, noting that at present the UN does not intend to change the current format of the talks. Announcing the visit, the spokesman of the UN Secretary-General Fred Eckhard said the main purpose is "familiarisation with Cyprus and the UN mission's work on the island and not to further the process of the proximity talks". Mr Eckhard said the Peruvian diplomat will go to Ankara and Athens after Nicosia for meetings with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem. [02]The Cyprus government has announced a number of measures to protect the Akamas peninsula, considered unique for its flora and fauna.At a meeting yesterday between President Glafcos Clerides and the Ministers in charge, it was decided to implement an overall development plan within a period of three months, which will include compensation of private property that lies within the forest area in this western tip of the island, the protection of its environment and the sustainable development of the region. Owners of private property within the forest areas but not on the sea will be compensated or their property exchanged with government land. No tourist development will be allowed in the sites Lara and Toxeftra, as they are one of the few areas left in the Mediterranean region where the caretta-caretta turtles come to lay their eggs. In addition a moratorium will be imposed on "safari trips" into Akamas and all licenses given will be reconsidered so that no cars travel on the forest roads. Other decisions include the removal of all signposts, the allocation of 50 thousand Cyprus pounds to clean the region and the preparation of a plan to reforest and restore the area used until recently by the British Bases for military exercises.
