    [01]

Cyprus Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, yesterday addressed the 105th session of the Committee of Ministers in Strasbourg.

In his speech he praised the role of the Council of Europe (CoE) in protecting human rights and pointed out the organisation's uniqueness regarding the right of citizens of its member states.

    [02]

Cyprus and Ireland signed in Dublin yesterday a memorandum of cooperation on European Union (EU) issues within the framework of Cyprus' harmonisation with the acquis communautaire.

The memorandum, signed between Cyprus Finance Minister, Takis Clerides and his Irish counterpart, Charlie McCreevy will promote cooperation between the two governments on EU matters.

Cyprus' Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said yesterday that a specific effort was being made with the exhumations and tests that were being carried out so as to support the Greek Cypriot side's demand that the fate of the missing should be investigated.

Asked whether the Government had decided to reopen the files of those killed during the invasion following the identification of the remains of Zinonas Zinonos who had been listed as a missing person, the Spokesman said, "This is something that in my opinion should have been done a long time ago. In any case, certain things will be clarified through this ordeal so that our position is well documented", he said.

He added that the Government would examine the issue in the light of the results of the investigations.

"The Government", he said "is willing to proceed with the opening of any grave where it is believed that unidentified persons might be buried".
