We must make sure the 21st is more peaceful and more humane," the Acting Chief of Mission at UNFICYP Mr James Holger stated yesterday.Speaking at the United Nations Open Day celebrations at Ledra Pallas hotel in Nicosia, Mr Holger, said that for people who work in peacekeeping missions like UNFICYP, the wish for peace is "especially strong". "It is our job to keep and help to foster peace on this island so that the children of Cyprus can grow up in a safe and peaceful environment. Our children and grandchildren represent the future, the next century, the next millennium", he added. People from all over the island including many Turkish Cypriots, attended the UN open day celebrations, which included a parade of children carrying flags from all 35 nations represented in UNFICYP, live concerts featuring a variety of performers, competitions, sports events, a photo exhibition, a film show, and entertainment for all the family. [02] P>"Our goal remains to get the two sides into negotiations without preconditions under UN auspices as called for by the G8 and the UN Security Council resolutions 1250 and 1251", US State Department Spokesman James Foley, stated last Thursday.Replying to questions on Cyprus during his daily press briefing, Mr Foley said that US Presidential Emissary Alfred Moses and Cyprus Coordinator Thomas Weston had "productive" and "helpful" meetings in Ankara, Athens and Nicosia. In Cyprus he said they met separately with President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Denktash. He pointed out that clearly Mr Moses and Mr Weston, still have a lot of work ahead of them. On their return to Washington, they will report to the US President and to Secretary Albright "with a view to moving forward toward comprehensive negotiations". The US government "will evaluate next steps on preparing the way for successful Cyprus talks", he said. "Certainly, our commitment to a Cyprus solution based on a bi-zonal, bi- communal federation remains very firm", he added. [03] P>The Ambassador of Cyprus to Austria Mr Nicos Makris has also been accredited as the Republic's Ambassador to the Republic of Slovakia.Mr Makris presented his credentials on 21st October to the President of the Republic of Slovakia Mr Rudolf Schuster. [04] P>According to a report released by the Department of Statistics and Research on Foreign Trade Statistics for the period January - July 1999, total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) totalled CP1.108,0 mn as compared with CP1.109,5 mn in the same period last year.Total exports fell to CP307,9 mn in relation to CP356,8 mn of the corresponding period in 1998. The trade deficit accounted for CP800,0 mn compared to CP752,7mn in January - July 1998. Domestic exports fell to 132,0 mn as compared to CP144,7 mn in January - July 1998, whilst re-exports were reduced considerably to CP176,0 mn compared to CP212,1 mn in the same period last year. During January - July 1999, the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at CP597,6 mn or 53,9 per cent.
