Government Spokesman Mr. Michalis Papapetrou said yesterday that if the new US initiative fails to curb Turkish intransigence, the only alternative will be the implementation of UN Resolution 1250 and the issuing of invitations from the UN Secretary-General for substantive talks. If Mr. Denktash does not respond, he said, the Secretary-General should apportion blame.

Replying to questions Mr. Papapetrou said it was obvious that Mr. Moses failed to make Mr. Denktash change his totally unacceptable stand after their consultations yesterday, and underlined the Cyprus Government's readiness to attend substantive talks.

Spanish Foreign Minister Mr. Abel Matutes said last Tuesday that the partition of Cyprus should in no way become an obstacle to the successful outcome of the Republic's EU negotiations process.

In a joint press conference, given after talks with his Greek counterpart Mr. George Papandreou in Madrid, Mr. Matutes referred to Cyprus' considerable progress achieved so far and expressed the hope that EU accession negotiations will conclude successfully.

Replying to relevant questions he said that a political resolution of the Cyprus problem is not a sine qua non condition for the successful outcome of the country's accession negotiations.

The President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides said yesterday that "Cyprus adopts and implements all international measures to fight crime, including assistance to the authorities of other countries".

President Clerides, who was addressing the 4th Conference of Specialised Services in the fight against corruption of the Council of Europe, held in Nicosia, stressed that corruption is today an international problem increasing rapidly in the world community and praised the Council of Europe's contribution in the fight against corruption.

President Clerides also said that Cyprus is a signatory to the Council of Europe Criminal Law Convention on corruption and "is currently in the process of preparing the enabling legislation for its ratification".

Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce Mr. Nicos Rolandis has said that the number of tourists that visited Cyprus during September 1999 marked an increase of 14.3 per cent compared to the same month last year.

Mr. Rolandis also indicated that the number of tourists visiting Cyprus between January-September 1999 also increased by 8.5 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies adopted last Tuesday a resolution on Cyprus' EU accession. The resolution urges the Italian government to support Cyprus' accession to the EU irrespective of a political settlement of the Cyprus problem. It also calls on the government to support the resumption of talks between the two sides on the basis of the G-8 call and on Resolution 1250.
