US State Department's Assistant Secretary Mr Marc Grossman said yesterday that the Cyprus problem will be one of the topics on the agenda of today's talks between US President Bill Clinton and Turkish Premier Mr Bulent Ecevit.

Briefing the press yesterday on the context of the talks, Mr Grossman referred to Cyprus. ''We think that the call that the G-8 made for Cyprus negotiations to begin under UN auspices without preconditions is the right policy'', he said, adding that ''I'm sure that this will be our policy for some time to come''.

President Clerides called yesterday on small island states to cooperate in order to face their challenges - whether they be security concerns, economic issues or environmental priorities.

Addressing a special session on the review and appraisal of the implementation of the programme of action for the sustainable development of small island states, the President of the Republic, pointing to the case of Cyprus, said that ''the example of Cyprus testifies to the inherent dangers confronting small countries in a world dominated by military strength and not by principles of international law and justice''.

President Clerides also called on the Turkish side to respond positively to the call of the G-8, the Security Council and the European Union for negotiations under the auspices of the Secretary General that will lead to a solution of the Cyprus problem in conformity with justice.

Cyprus President Mr Glafcos Clerides stressed last Saturday that ''if there is going to be a breakthrough to the solution of the Cyprus problem, it would greatly depend on the international community and what pressure it would exercise to bring the two sides at the negotiating table and help them find a solution''.

President Clerides was speaking at a special ceremony at Seton Hall University in New York on Saturday 25 September during which he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by the School of Diplomacy and International Relations. In his speech, President Clerides stressed that ''we are prepared to sit at the negotiating table and talk to Mr Denktash or the representatives of the Turkish community in a spirit of good will and a spirit of understanding of their problems and their difficulties''.

Referring to Cyprus' efforts to join the EU, President Clerides repeated his invitation to the Turkish Cypriot side to participate in the Republic's negotiating team, adding that ''within the context of the European Union, both communities will prosper.''

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides delivered yesterday a speech at New York's Council on Foreign Relations.

In his speech entitled ''Prospects for a Resolution of the Cyprus Problem'', President Clerides referred to Cyprus' accession course and to his invitation to the Turkish Cypriot side to actively participate in the team that conducts EU negotiations. President Clerides also made reference to the difficulties encountered by Turkey in its efforts to join the EU. Regarding the Cyprus Problem, President Clerides stressed that all efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem have not yielded any positive result so far because of the Turkish intransigent stance on the matter and in particular to the Turkish Cypriot leader's demands concerning the Republic's EU course and the envisaged solution to the Cyprus problem.

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides met yesterday with representatives of the Greek Cypriot community in the United States and briefed them on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem . President Clerides exchanged views with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot community on ways through which the Greek community could more effectively influence the decision - making centers in the States on the promotion of the Cyprus problem.

Foreign Minister Mr Ioannis Kasoulides held yesterday separate meetings, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, with his counterparts of New Zealand and Bahrain Messrs Don McKinnon and Shaikh Mohamed Bin Al- Khalifa.
