Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 99-09-22Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Wednesday, 22 September 1999[01] P>Cyprus' Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides had a meeting in New York yesterday with Britain's special envoy for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay.Speaking after the meeting Mr Kasoulides emphasised that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council want their decision to embark on talks on Cyprus implemented. He added that we are going through a phase of improved relations between Greece and Turkey, when Turkey is being discussed as a candidate EU member and when none of the protagonists have elections to use as an excuse. "This opportunity should not be lost and we hope it will not be lost, the time is ripe," Mr Kasoulides said. [02] P>Finland's Foreign Minister Tarja Halonen, speaking on behalf of the European Union in her address before the UN General Assembly yesterday, in a reference to Cyprus, urged the leaders of the two communities to accept invitations towards a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus problem under the auspices of the UN Secretary General."The EU continues to fully support the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations towards a negotiated political settlement of the Cyprus question", Ms Halonen said. During her speech a memorandum was circulated containing inter alia the EU's position on various international issues including Cyprus. [03] P>Greece's Foreign Minister George Papandreou has expressed the hope that the UN Secretary General Kofi Anan will soon issue an invitation to both sides in Cyprus for talks towards a settlement of the Cyprus problem.Speaking to the press after a meeting in New York yesterday with the British special envoy for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay, Mr Papandreou said that they had reviewed developments around the Cyprus problem. He emphasised that this period was an opportunity which must not be lost, without that meaning that a positive outcome is guaranteed. Mr Papandreou also said that he had had a brief meeting with US President Bill Clinton at a luncheon given by the Secretary-General and that Mr Clinton had assured him he is very interested in and would do all he can towards a Cyprus settlement.
