President Glafcos Clerides has told Britain's envoy for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay, that the Greek Cypriot side will not agree to any pre-conditions set by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash before entering talks on finding a settlement to the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus' Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, told the press after a 50-minute meeting in New York yesterday between President Clerides and Sir David, in the presence of Cyprus Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, that they had reviewed the situation in general as it stands in the light of various efforts to kick-start the talks on Cyprus.

Sir David on his part refused to make any statements to the press other than to say that he had had a very good meeting with President Clerides.

Cyprus' Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, yesterday began his contacts with his counterparts in the framework of the 54th Session of the UN General Assembly.

He met with Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk Al-Shara with whom he reviewed developments in the Middle East question, bilateral relations and the Cyprus problem. He also discussed the Cyprus problem with his Iranian counterpart, Dr Kamal Kharrazi and the Palestinian Head for Foreign Affairs matters, Farouk Kaddoumi.

Mr Kasoulides also met with the Foreign Ministers of Cuba, India and Luxembourg. Moreover he had short meetings with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Austria and the Prime Minister of Norway.

Greece's Foreign Minister George Papandreou has said that his country's basic aim is to achieve a settlement of the Cyprus problem and at the same time to see Cyprus join the European Union.

"Together with the government of Cyprus", he said "we have already drawn up firm and specific steps whereby this can be achieved".

Mr Papandreou was speaking at a reception in New York yesterday during which he also referred to the void that the death of Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannos Kranidiotis has left at a particularly crucial time just a few months away from talks on Turkey's EU candidacy and just as talks between Greek and Turkish Cypriots are about to begin.

The protocol was signed after two days of talks in Bahrain between a delegation from the Ministry of Communications and Works led by the Ministry's Director General, Mr Vasos Pyrgos.
