US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Mr. Thomas Weston met yesterday with Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Mr Yiannos Kranidiotis with whom he discussed the Cyprus problem.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mr Weston noted that a new US team is currently dealing with the Cyprus problem, a fact, he said ''that reflects the US administration commitment to finding a just and viable Cyprus settlement''

Mr Weston said that the status quo in Cyprus is not the best possible alternative, adding that the division of the island remains a problem for the international community.

On his part, Mr Kranidiotis pointed out that ''the peace process in the Middle East creates optimism for a just and viable Cyprus settlement based on UN resolutions''.

He also said that ''the Cyprus problem can not remain an open wound''because it will affect peace, stability and cooperation in the region''.

Mr. Kranidiotis added that Greece looks to the UN initiatives and the help from the US and the European Union.

Moreover he called on the international community to exert pressure on Turkey to co-operate with the international community and comply with international law and UN resolutions
