[01] President Clinton pledges to intensity efforts towards resolving the Cyprus problem

US President Bill Clinton reiterated his firm commitment to finding a solution to "the problems that plague Cyprus".

In a letter of reply dated March 25, to Mr Angelo Tsakopoulos, leading figure of the National Committee on US-Greece Relations, President Clinton stresses that he "shares the concern that we have not seen more progress towards resolution of the Cyprus conflict", adding that the "US administration will intensify its efforts to convince all parties that negotiations are the only way to resolve the conflict".

[02] President Clerides meets with Syrian counterpart

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides held yesterday a meeting with his Syrian counterpart Hafez-Al-Assad.

The Syrian President hosted a lunch in President Clerides' honour, who is on a private visit to Lebanon and Syria.

[03] AHI letter to President Clinton criticises double standards on Cyprus

The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) sent a letter to President Clinton on April 2, criticising US policy of double standards towards Turkey regarding Cyprus and the Kurds.

The letter mentions that "the reasons cited by the US administration for action against Serbia apply equally to Turkey". The letter also states that" in relation to Cyprus, Turkey's occupation of 37 per cent of the island is a clear and unambiguous violation of international law, including the UN Charter and the North Atlantic Treaty. Further, Turkey violated US laws because it illegally used US supplied arms in its invasion of Cyprus".

Moreover the letter calls on the US administration "to use the opportunity of its engagement in the Balkans to act on the more serious problems of aggression against Cyprus by the military controlled government of Turkey".

[04] Increase in tourist arrivals

The number of travellers arrivals marked an increase of 3 per cent in February 1999 over 1998, reaching a total of 108,529.

Arrivals for the January-February 1999 period were also up 1.6 per cent reaching 205,743. During the same period in 1998 arrivals reached 202, 445.
