[01] Demilitarisation is a major element in a Cyprus settlement

"As long as the present deadlock continues, tension will persist and may get worst", commented the Russian Foreign Ministry envoy Vladimir Tchizhof after a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides, on Monday.

"Our particular concern is lack of progress on the Cyprus issue", he told journalists and added: This lack of progress and the deadlock are not due to the S-300 missiles issue.

Replying to another question, the Russian envoy said that his country's proposals focus on demilitarisation, which is "a major element in an eventual settlement of the Cyprus question".

[02] State Department: No comment on European Court's decision against Turkey

"We are aware of the European Court's decision... I have no particular comment that's new", Mr James Rubin told journalists in his daily briefing.

He was replying to a question about the future of the peace process after Turkish reactions to the decision under which Turkey has to pay compensations to Titina Loizidou, a refugee from Kyrenia, in occupied Cyprus. The State Department spokesman added that "it's up for Mr Denktash to explain his refusal to restart talks on the Cyprus issue" and his comments on the European Court's decision.

He reiterated once again that his government will "continue to work on the Cyprus issue" and stressed the need to start a process that "addresses the full range of issues in a Cyprus settlement".

[03] New ambassadors for Peru and the Holy See

The President of the Republic, Mr Glafcos Clerides, received the credentials of two new ambassadors to Cyprus: Mr Luis Solari Tudela is the new Ambassador of Peru and Archbishop Pietro Sambi the new Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See, based in Jerusalem.
