Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 98-02-18Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>News UpdateWednesday, 18/02/98CONTENTS[01] UN Secretary General committed to work for lasting peace in CyprusUN Secretary General Kofi Annan has conveyed his congratulations to President Glafcos Clerides on his re-election to the presidency of the Republic of Cyprus.A statement issued by Mr Annan's Spokesman on 16.2.98, says that the UN chief "takes this opportunity to wish Mr Clerides success and to reaffirm his commitment to continuing his good offices mission in search of a comprehensive and lasting peace on Cyprus. He intends to press forward with the activities of his Special Adviser, Diego Cordovez, in the near future to revitalize the process of negotiations". Meanwhile, UN Resident Representative in Cyprus Gustave Feissel is today departing to New York for contacts on the next steps in efforts for a Cyprus solution. Speaking to the press after a meeting with President Clerides on Monday 16.2.98, Mr Feissel stressed that "now that the elections are over we have to get into high gear and I am sure this is what is going to happen". [02] Congratulations to President CleridesIn a congratulatory message to President Clerides on his re-election for a second five-year term, Greek Premier Costas Simitis wishes the attainment of our common goals.He refers to the difficult problems which have to be solved, adding that he is "convinced that justice and reason will prevail in the end and that our struggles will culminate in Cyprus' accession to the European Union to the benefit of all Cypriots". Commonwealth Secretary-General Emeka Anyaoku sent his warmest congratulations and conveyed the Commonwealth's assurances for "full cooperation in the attempts to bring about a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem and in the furtherance of the objectives which Cyprus and the Commonwealth share". Leni Fischer, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, extended her very best wishes for success in the important task Mr Clerides faces during his second term of office, in particular, the negotiations for admission to the European Union and the efforts to reach a peaceful and lasting settlement to the Cyprus issue. Congratulatory messages were also sent by the Presidents of Syria, Finland and Estonia.
