[01] President Clerides starts deliberations to form new governmentPresident Glafcos Clerides is today starting consultations with all political parties to form a new government, following his re-election to the presidency for a second five-year term.President Clerides has already called for a national unity government and invitations are expected to be sent to all political parties to participate, including left-wing AKEL and the Democratic Party (DIKO) which supported Clerides' opponent George Iacovou. Most political parties said they would participate in a national unity government. However, AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias said his party will not participate in Mr Clerides' government and will remain in the opposition. A similar stance is expected from DIKO President Spyros Kyprianou. [02] Santer looks forward to consolidation of EU-Cyprus relationsThe President of the European Commission Mr Jacques Santer said yesterday that he is looking forward to a further consolidation of Cyprus - European Union relations, following Glafcos Clerides' re-election to the presidency.In a message to President Clerides, Santer extends "most sincere congratulations" both on behalf of himself and the European Commission. At the same time Mr Santer expresses the hope that "efforts to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem will yield results in the nearest possible future". [03] United States to work closely with President Clerides for Cyprus settlementThe United States have expressed their congratulations to President Clerides on his re-election for a new five-year term and have described relations with Mr Clerides during his first term in office as excellent.The Clinton administration also expressed its will to cooperate closely with Mr Clerides in order to bring about a lasting and viable settlement to the Cyprus problem. [04] Greek President congratulates CleridesGreek President Constantinos Stephanopoulos yesterday sent a congratulatory message to Glafcos Clerides on his re-election to the presidency of the Republic, wishing him every success in his difficult task."You may always depend on the indivisible support of all the Greek people towards finding a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem based on the principles of international law", Mr Stephanopoulos stressed in his message. [05] US Senators support Holbrooke initiativeTwo former chairmen of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee released yesterday a statement expressing support to the imminent US initiative aiming at ending the division of Cyprus.Charles Percy (Republican) and Claiborne Pell (Democrat) expressed approval of Washington's "recent, more even-handed policy" towards Cyprus, Greece and Turkey. They point to the recent State Department's position regarding overflights of Turkish fighters violating Greek and Cypriot sovereign territory and airspace. "If Greece or Cyprus were to carry out similar activities against Turkey, our State Department should be equally critical", they add. Percy and Pell also commend the criteria set by the European Union in order for Turkey to proceed with its European course, which include respect for human rights and support of UN negotiations for a Cyprus settlement. "It is in the best interest of the people of Turkey, Greece and Cyprus for their governments to act in accordance with these principles of civilisation cited by the EU", they point out.
