[01] Accord between Turkey and Turkish Cypriot pseudostate condemned

With only five days left before the second round of direct talks, Turkey and the Denktash regime signed a new accord strengthening their pledge for partial integration.

The agreement was signed yesterday (6.8.97) by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and Turkey's visiting Foreign Minister Ismail Cem, and calls for "gradual economic and financial integration and partial integration on security, defence and Foreign policy matters" between Turkey and the "TRNC".

According to the agreement an "association council" will be set up to determine the measures to be taken for partial integration and monitor their implementation.

In a statement released yesterday, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs points out that the agreement simply institutionalises the full political and military control that Turkey has been exerting in the occupied parts of Cyprus for years.

The statement also stresses that the fact that Turkey chose to sign the agreement at this moments, with the direct talks underway, shows that it maintains its internationally unique attitude towards the world, "disregarding laws and rules which it signs only to transgress on them depending on its own interests."

Government Spokesman, Manolis Christofides, described the accord between Turkey and the pseudostate as a "provocation to the international community" and said it would be discussed today with political leaders, during the National Council.

Christofides said that the Government is closely monitoring the developments.

[02] National Council meets today

The National Council meets today to decide on the observations the Greek Cypriot side will make on a UN non-paper, submitted to the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides at the first round of direct talks in Troutbeck, New York.

Government Spokesman Manolis Christofides said yesterday that all basic aspects of the Cyprus problem will be discussed during the second round of talks starting in Switzerland on Monday (11.8.97).

[03] Greek Cypriots to visit Apostolos Andreas Monastery in occupied area

Around 600 Greek Cypriots will visit the Monastery of Apostolos Andreas in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus on 15 August 1997.

Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Takis Christopoulos, made the announcement yesterday adding that about 400 Turkish Cypriots will come tomorrow to visit the village of Kokkina in the free areas on the north-western coast of the island.

Christopoulos said that both sides will take the necessary measures to make sure that the visits take place without any problems.
