[01] Second round of talks confirmed by UN
The UN has officially confirmed that the second round of talks between the
Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides will take place as planned near Montreux in
Switzerland. "It's in the Troutbeck of Switzerland. It's a conference
facility in a little village near Montreux and they want really minimum
publicity for this second round", said the UN Secretary General's Spokesman
Mr. Fred Eckhard yesterday. UN Spokesman in Nicosia Waldemar Rokoszewski
specified to the Cyprus News Agency that the name of the village is Glion.
The UN Secretary General's special advisor Diego Cordovez will chair the
negotiations. Foreign envoys will also be present in Glion. Government
Spokesman Manolis Christofides stressed yesterday that "we consider this
round of talks of the utmost importance for a Cyprus settlement and an
opportunity for overall discussion on the Cyprus problem." Moreover
President Clerides confirmed yesterday that Attorney-General Alecos
Markides prepared a document outlining the Greek Cypriot positions on the
UN paper put forward at the first round of direct talks at Troutbeck (USA),
by Diego Cordovez.
[02] Greek Foreign Minister: Cyprus must accede to the EU irrespective of
solution
Turkey will not be admitted to the European Union (EU) and relations
between Greece and Turkey will not improve if the Cyprus issue is not
resolved, said Greek Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos in an interview
with the "Washington Post". Responding to a question if the Cyprus problem
must be resolved prior to Cyprus' accession to the EU, Pangalos said that
Cyprus would be better off if it were to join the EU with its problem
resolved. The Greek Foreign Minister did stress, however, that Cyprus must
accede to the EU irrespective of a solution to its problem.
[03] New Greek Ambassador in Cyprus
Greece's new Ambassador to Cyprus Kyriakos Rodousakis, who arrived in the
island on 4.8.97, pledged to work towards "furthering contact and relations
between the two countries, in all fields" including the political, economic,
cultural and defence sectors. Rodousakis, has also stressed he is taking up
his post at a crucial time for the Republic, in view of renewed efforts for
a settlement of the protracted Cyprus problem and negotiations for the
island's European Union accession.
