Daily briefing of the Press by the Government Spokesman

At today's briefing of the Press the Government Spokesman Mr Kypros Chrysostomides made reference to the statements by the Dutch Ambassador at the Council of Europe who said that, despite the decision that was adopted on the Loizidou case, the issue was not over. Mr Chrysostomides said that 2005 was not a milestone for the commencement of any other process and that the decision was essentially referring to an opportune time, meaning that the issue could be raised at any time.

«Consequently what has been said on the specific matter in the past does not seem to be justified. In addition there is no justification for the alleged isolation of the Government as far as the procedures before the ECHR and the Council of Europe are concerned», the Spokesman said.

Asked whether there was a reply by Mr Denktash on the issue of the missing, Mr Chrysostomides said that there wasn't one yet. Asked if the Government of Cyprus intended to make any representations regarding Mr Weston's statements by which he treated both sides equally, Mr Chrysostomides said that a general observation was made with reference to Mr Weston's statements, namely that it was unfair to treat both sides equally and added that Mr Weston avoided to clarify which side was to blame.

Asked if there was any message conveyed by the UN Secretary-General, Mr Chrysostomides replied in the negative.
