workshop Vasiliou [01] Cyprus EU Presidency reaches agreement on Unitary Patent PackageThe Cyprus EU Presidency has succeeded in closing a dossier which has been on the EU agenda for over 30 years.On Monday the Member States participating in the enhanced cooperation reached unanimous agreement on the Unitary Patent Package at the meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER I), paving the way for the first European unitary patent to be introduced early 2014. Deputy Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the EU Ambassador George Zodiates has told CNA that the unitary patent package would contribute to the recovery of the EU economy since it cuts the costs of patent protection by 80%. [02] Migrants' right to equal treatment the focus of international workshopThe right of migrants to equal treatment in the workplace, education, medical treatment, public services and social protection is the focus of an international workshop which takes place at the Ministry of Finance, in Nicosia, on Wednesday.Speakers at the workshop expressed concern for the cultivation of xenophobic attitudes and behaviour in the EU, in recent years. According to data presented by Cyprus Ombudsman Eliza Savvidou a total of 180,000 migrants live in Cyprus today, equaling 1/5 of the total population. [03] Highly skilled workers will help growth in EU, says Commissioner VasiliouThe economy continues to increase demand for higher skills, however more than 70 million Europeans have only low or no formal qualifications, Commissioner Androula Vasiliou has stressed.Speaking Tuesday at a press conference in Strasbourg where she presented the "Rethinking Education" initiative, Vasiliou noted that youth unemployment is approaching 23% across Europe and at the same time there are over 2 million job vacancies. She added that in 2011, 13.5% of students in the EU dropped out of school after lower secondary education and in 9 member states, more than half of the adult population has no or low computer skills.
