[01] Commission refers Cyprus to Court for failing to transpose EU rulesThe European Commission is referring Cyprus and the Netherlands to the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to notify national measures to implement EU rules easing access to justice in cross-border legal disputes.The Mediation Directive applies when two parties involved in a cross-border dispute voluntarily agree to settle their dispute using an impartial mediator. The deadline for transposing the Directive into national law was 21 May 2011. According to a Commission press release, settling disputes and disagreements through courts is often costly and time-consuming. [02] MEPs and Ministers focus on EU cohesion policy during meetingsThe European Parliament's Committee on Regional Development held a series of meetings on Thursday in Cyprus, focusing on European regulations on the EU cohesion policy after 2013, the European Social Fund, the course of works in Cyprus and the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU.The Committee met with Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Soteroulla Charalambous, Minister of the Interior Eleni Mavrou, Deputy Minister to the President on European Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis and representatives of the Planning Bureau dealing with structural and cohesion funds. Speaking at a press conference after the meetings, Chairman of the Committee on Regional Development George Stavrakakis said Cyprus was one of the few countries whose whole area belongs to the regions of the competitiveness and employment goals. [03] EU aviation carriers particularly hit by recessionAlthough the European aviation industry as a whole is a world leader, European carriers have been particularly hit by the recession.European aviation industry comprises global leaders in aviation manufacturing, airlines, airport hubs as well as for air traffic management research and technology. However, these positions are under threat from a number of new challenges, intense international competition and new entrants into the markets. According to projections, net profits of European commercial airlines will fall from 0.5 billion US dollars in 2011 to a net loss of 1.1 billion US dollars in 2012. [04] Bank deposits slightly up in August, says Central BankThe flow of deposits in the domestic banking system recorded in August a slight increase, according to data released by the Central Bank of Cyprus.The Bank announced on Thursday that deposits in domestic financial institutions recorded an increase of 0.5% in August on an annual basis or 837.9 million euros, reaching 70.66 billion euros compared to 69.82 billion in August of 2011. Deposits increased by 99.4 million euros in August compared to the previous month. If we no longer take the trouble to learn our neighbours' language, then we are less likely to understand their concerns, and even less likely to lend a helping hand. [06] Nicosia among the cities participating in Researchers' NightThe capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, will be among the cities, where events will take place in the framework of the 7th Researchers' Night.Around 350 cities will organise a series of events Friday night, with the aim of discovering science in a fun way and raising interest in research careers. The public will be able to take part in experiments, join interactive science shows, visit usually restricted research laboratories and try out complex equipment. During Researchers' Night, which is funded by the EU, scientists from all disciplines take over public spaces â?" shopping malls, squares, historic monuments, parks, and museums - to show people of all ages how their work impacts on daily life.
