[01] President Christofias praises role of UN chief in Cyprus peace effort

In a speech at a dinner hosted in his honour by the Cyprus Federation of America on Monday, President Christofias said "irrespective of the difference of opinion, this SG did his utmost to help us promote a solution to the Cyprus issue".

He said "the SG has been under a lot of pressure to make statements on the procedure of the talks and on convening an international conference, but at the end, I believe we have maintained our positions and pressure from some of our allies has not been successful".

[02] President thanks Greece for keeping Cyprus a priority

Speaking after a meeting in New York with Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Demetris Avramopoulos, President Christofias said "we are in a tight spot, both governments and peoples, regarding the various financial issues, and of course we will fight off any attack."

"The people of Cyprus will also be called upon to make sacrifices," he said and expressed hope that "the Greek government will keep the bastions well."

[03] Commission refers Cyprus to Court for failing to transpose EU rules

The Mediation Directive applies when two parties involved in a cross-border dispute voluntarily agree to settle their dispute using an impartial mediator.

The deadline for transposing the Directive into national law was 21 May 2011. According to a Commission press release, settling disputes and disagreements through courts is often costly and time-consuming.

[04] Reunification can drive Cyprus out of the crisis, Cypriot parties say

The parties met at Ledra Palace, in Nicosia and discussed the topic "The way out of recession and forward to a common future of growth, peace, prosperity and further integration in the European Union family".

After the meeting, Slovak Ambassador Anna TureniÄ?ova read the joint communique which states that "the leaders have agreed that reunification can drive Cyprus out of the economic crisis, also by enabling peaceful cooperation in the energy sector amongst all countries in the Eastern Mediterranean, in a way that will also benefit our European Union partners". Greek Cypriot party United Democrats (EDI) was the host of the meeting.

[05] Foreign Minister concludes contacts in New York

Marcoullis, who was in New York to attend the deliberations of the UN General Assembly, met with her counterparts from Montenegro and Guatemala, Neboisha Kaludjerevic and Harold Caballeros, respectively.

During her meeting with Kaludjerevic, the two reviewed bilateral ties and Montenegro's EU accession course. With Caballeros, Marcoullis discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and expressed gratitude for the support it has provided to Cyprus, as non permanent member of the Security Council. She also extended an invitation to Caballeros to visit Cyprus.

[06] Germany, France and Britain discuss merger of military companies

The talks took place on the sidelines of the informal Council of EU Defence Ministers, that took place in Nicosia.

Speaking to the media on arrival at the Filoxenia Conference Center for the second day of the Council deliberations, Germanyâ??s Defence Minister Thomas De Maiziere confirmed that he had talks with his French and British counterparts, describing the discussions as constructive. He however noted that the three countries need more time in order to reach consensus.
