  • [01] Tight security measures for APOEL-Real match

The Cyprus Police are taking stringent security measures for tonight's soccer game between Nicosia APOEL FC and Real Madrid for the Champions League quarterfinals.

The match is set to start at 21.45 local time (1845 GMT) at GSP Stadium in the capital Nicosia and the second leg will be held in Santiago Bernabeu on April 4.

Nicosia Police Chief Kypros Michaelides told CNA today that a total of 270 policemen will be on duty tonight and will be patrolling the stadium.

He explained that the Police will first check all fans to ensure the validity of their tickets and right afterwards they will go through a body check to remove any dangerous items they attempt to carry into the stadium.

Furthermore, Police are taking tight measures around the Nicosia hotel where Real's team and management are staying.

According to Michaelides, a total of 30 people attempted to enter the fenced area of the hotel last night and were immediately spotted by the Police who ordered them to leave the area.

APOEL Nicosia qualified to the final 8 of Champions League to become the first Cypriot team to reach quarter-finals of a European competition.

    [02] Ban-Erdogan discuss Cyprus issue

The Cyprus issue was discussed during a meeting in Seoul between the UN Secretary-General and the Turkish Prime Minister.

A read-out of the Secretary-General's meeting with the Prime Minister of Turkey said that the "Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Prime Minister of Turkey, on the margins of the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit today".

"They discussed the latest developments regarding Syria and Cyprus", it added.

[03] Stolen Byzantine frescoes return home

Byzantine frescoes, dating back to the 13th century, illegally exported from the island's Turkish occupied northern part, are now back home, exhibited in Nicosia.

The frescoes finally arrived home a fortnight ago, decades after their removal from a church in the occupied areas following the 1974 Turkish invasion, are now on exhibition at the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation, at the Archbishopric Palace in Nicosia.

The frescoes had been stolen from the church of Saint Euphemianos in Lysi village and were cut into 38 pieces by thieves intending to sell them on the black market.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos pointed out that the ultimate goal of the Cyprus Church and the Government is for the frescoes to return to their home, the Saint Euphemianos church in Lysi, where they belong.
