The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) did not participate in negotiations for obtaining electricity from the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus but provided two advisers on a personal level for the commercial part of the deal, at the request of Manthos Mavrommatis, President of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who carried out the negotiations also on a personal level.

EAC Chairman Charis Thrassou told CNA that the EAC covered two aspects of the effort, the technical and commercial, but did not officially take part in the talks. Asked about the cost of purchasing power from the occupied areas, Thrassou said it was acceptable and that the deal would be valid until the end of August, with the possibility of requesting an extension period. Regarding the quantity of power, Thrassou said the Turkish Cypriots have offered to provide up to 110 MW but the system can only take a load of 80 MW.

Asked about the generators from Greece, Thrassou said a total of about 120 containers were expected to be shipped to Cyprus over the course of next week. Regarding the assessment of the damage sustained by the island`s major power plant at Vassiliko, which was destroyed by the shock wave of Monday`s explosion of munitions at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base, Thrassou said EAC experts have not yet entered the site, since the insurance company wishes to complete its own assessment first.
