  • [01] CYPRUS TALKS - MEETING

President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu discussed on Thursday about the meeting they will have on July 7 with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki moon, in Geneva, and authorized their representatives to continue the discussion on Saturday.

In statements after a meeting of the two leaders, in the framework of UN-led direct negotiations aiming at a settlement of the Cyprus problem, UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim said the two leaders ``continued their exchange of views in a positive climate mainly focused on the police issue. They also discussed external relations and the forthcoming meeting that they will have with the Secretary-General in Geneva.``

``The leaders authorized their representatives to continue the discussion on Saturday with a view to concluding on this. The representatives will meet at 10:30 on Saturday morning. The outcome of the meeting on Saturday will be subject to the approval of the leaders,`` Buttenheim concluded.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The leaders of the two communities are currently engaged in UN-led negotiations, with an aim to reunify the island.

    [02] CYPRUS - DIGITAL TV

Cyprus steps over to digital era, with the introduction of digital TV as of midnight.

Everything is ready for the historic Analogue Switch-off , Stelios Himonas, Department of Electronic Communications Director at the Ministry of Communications and Works told CNA on Thursday, noting that we are ready and on alert in order to cope with any problems that might arise.

He said that digital technology provides flexibility to providers and the benefits over analogue include excellent picture and sound quality, use of the Electronic Program Guide [EPG] that provides the viewer with programme information such as titles, start and finish times, program duration/ description and better signal reception (compared to analogue reception).

Neofytos Epaminondas, Director of the Cyprus Radio and Television Authority, told CNA that as of now, the only station that will not be able to broadcast tomorrow, is Plus TV, explaining that the application the station had handed in was incomplete, and therefore the Authority required additional information which will be assessed over a board meeting next Wednesday.

Two thousand and forty four undergraduate positions in educational institutions in Cyprus and military and drama schools in Greece were allocated by the Ministry of Education and Culture, following the results of the exams which took place in late May.
