  • [01] BRITISH MP - LITURGY

The Turkish authorities must respect Greek Cypriots` basic religious freedom, ``which is why I have joined with the Association of Rizokarpaso in Britain in calling for the Government to condemn these actions,`` British Conservative MP Mike Freer has said.

According to an announcement, Freer, who was speaking from Finchley, his constituency, added that the Turkish authorities must be made to realise that such human rights abuses are unacceptable and undermine attempts to find a long-term settlement for Cyprus.``

On Christmas Day, the Turkish military entered the church of Rizokarpaso village, one of a handful of Greek Orthodox churches allowed to operate in the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus, and interrupted the Christmas liturgy.

    [02] INDICES - GROWTH

Ministry of Finance foresees an increase of 1,5 % in the economic growth for the year 2011 whereas financial specialists calculate this number to rise to 1,8%, Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis said today.

Speaking to journalists following meetings he had with delegations from Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation, Stavrakis said that the public deficit for 2010 is estimated to be 5,5%, noting that the European Union required a deficit of 6%, thus the goal is very much achieved.

Regarding the public debt, the Minister of Finance said that it is expected to reach 60,6%, underlining the fact that EU was foreseeing this index to reach 62%.

Cyprus debt will be reduced, thus the loans will be cut down by 250 million euro and therefore there will be a great benefit for the consumers, Stavrakis added.

Commenting on the economic growth index, Minister of Finance said that there will be an increase of 1,5%, adding however that Cyprus will have to turn to foreign markets in the second half of 2011.
