  • [01] NEW CHILDREN`S ONCOLOGY WING - MAKARIO HOSPITAL

Cyprus Minister of Health Christos Patsalides visited today the new childrens oncology wing at the Makarios Hospital which is expected to be operational by the end of January or the beginning of February, approximately eight months ahead of the original schedule.

Painted in bright colours, with comfortable rooms and state of the art equipment the new wing contains 19 rooms, 4 of which are single occupancy rooms intended for patients in critical condition.

As pharmacist Stalo Savvidou explained a special parenteral nutrition solutions unit is operational since June, whereas another unit for the preparation of inhibitors is expected to open soon, both providing the solutions needed island wide.

Patsalides expressed his satisfaction that the project is almost complete noting that it is a project which began 2.5 to 3 years ago and that seeing it come to life is extremely satisfactory for all those who worked hard towards achieving it.

The old premises Patsalides said, do not live up to the demands of 2011, they served their purpose in earlier years, however we will now be moving to a new, specially equipped, specifically designed space, a new oncology wing we can all be proud of.

Patsalides also noted that the new wing will include a separate day care unit which as he said is extremely important for both psychological and practical reasons.

He also stressed the importance of timely construction of health related projects, explaining that once the new oncology wing is operational, work will begin on the old oncology wing with the aim of transforming it to a childrens psychiatric wing.
