  • [01] LEADERS - CYPRUS TALKS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu meet again today, to continue discussion on the issue of property, in the framework of UN-led direct negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem.

The meeting takes place at the official residence of the UNFICYP Chief of Mission in the United Nations Protected Area (UNPA) Lisa Buttenheim, in Nicosia.

Peace talks began in September 2008 between President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Talks continue now with Eroglu, who succeeded Talat in April this year.

    [02] GOVERNMENT DIRECT TRADE

Trade issues fall within the competence of each countrys sovereign rights and it is a sovereign right of the Republic of Cyprus to decide on the countrys external trade issues, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said.

He added that the Government of Cyprus expects from its partners and the EU to support the just cause of a Member State, striving to cast out the occupation and reunify the country and the people. Stephanou, while commenting on the discussion at the European Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs regarding the direct trade regulation, said moreover that the EU would benefit as well, by getting rid of a problem it deals with.

The President of the Republic has made a specific proposition, so that Turkish Cypriots may trade without violating the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus, the Government Spokesman noted. He said that the Government of Cyprus expects from the EU to back this proposal, so as to give a new impetus in the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

President Christofias has put forward a three-tier proposal in a bid to help make headway at the talks he is currently engaged with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Dervis Eroglu. One proposal envisages the return of the fenced-off area of Varosha and the simultaneous opening of the citys port for trade for the Turkish Cypriot Community, under EU supervision.

Cyprus Government underlines that the EU regulation on direct trade of Cyprus` northern Turkish occupied areas with the EU violates Protocol 10 of Cyprus Accession Treaty to the EU, adding that the occupied part of Cyprus belongs to Cyprus and as a result it is EU territory. As regards Protocol 10 of the EU Cyprus Accession Treaty, the Government recalls that this Protocol refers to the anomalous situation in Cyprus, namely to the fact that the legal government can not exert full control over its whole territory.
