The President outlined these views after a briefing in New York of the leadership of the Cyprus Federation of America on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and the progress in the UN-led direct talks between the leaders of the two communities to find a mutually agreed solution.

President Christofias also discussed with Cypriot American community officials issues related to improved coordination and closer cooperation with the government, so that expatriates intervention in favor of the case of Cyprus is more effective.

Speaking after the meeting, President Christofias said that Cyprus is investing too much in the Federation with regard to its actions within the United States of America and its effort to influence the respective administrations of the United States ``for more correct positions on the Cyprus problem and if possible, support our case.``

He added that he was given the opportunity to be very detailed in his briefing and to discuss ways of cooperation regarding efforts by the Federation towards the U.S. Administration.

Asked to comment on his previous statement that he expects the U.S. to turn words into action, President responded positively and said that the Federation expects that as well.

He noted that before the elections the new US Administration had taken a very clear position with regard to the substance of the Cyprus problem and the need to end Turkeys occupation.

``Indeed, we expect that - although having no illusions that the United States will turn its back on Turkey, a strategic ally of theirs - they see things through a more objective and fair lence regarding our case too`` President Christofias said.

The Cypriot people are proud and dignified, he noted. and have every right as all other nations to live peacefully and free in the context of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with the rights and freedoms which the United States proclaim that they defend safeguarded, he concluded.

The President of the Cyprus Federation of America Panicos Papanicolaou said that President Christofias briefed Federation representatives on the current phase of the Cyprus problem.

He said there was an exchange of views on how the Cypriot community in America can be more efficient and thanked the President for his cooperation and time.

We look forward, he said, to a more close and sincere cooperation in the future.

The meeting was also attended by Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, Director of the Diplomatic Office of the President Ambassador Leonidas Pantelides, Ambassador to the United States Pavlos Anastasiades and the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN Ambassador Minas Hadjimichael.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third territory. UN - led talks are underway between the leaders of the two communities of Cyprus, President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu to find a solution that will reunite the country.

[02] UNSG - CYPRUS PEACE TALKS

According to a UN read-out, Ban and the Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu discussed the status of the negotiation process to find a comprehensive solution to the long-standing Cyprus problem. The Secretary-General expressed his appreciation of the commitment of the two leaders Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Eroglu - to work towards a mutually acceptable settlement.

He commended the leaders for their constructive approach on the property chapter, and encouraged them to redouble their efforts to seek convergences on this complex and key issue. The Secretary-General reiterated the strong commitment of the United Nations to continuing its support for the Cypriot-led negotiation process.

[03] UNSG - SWEDISH FM - CYPRUS

According to the read-out of the meeting, the two men discussed a range of issues, including the situation in Afghanistan, Iraq and Cyprus. They also discussed the situation in Sudan, noting the importance of the referendum to be held in the South it is added.

Ban has met in New York with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Dervis Eroglu, who are engaged in talks to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
