  • [01] SPOKESMAN CYPRUS TALKS PRESIDENTS PROPOSALS

The proposals which President of the Republic Demetris Christofias has submitted, if accepted, will speed up the negotiating process, said Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou.

Invited to comment on efforts by the Turkish side to blame the Greek Cypriot side in the event the Cyprus peace talks collapse, Stephanou said that Turkeys tactics and policy are well known; on the one hand it looks like it is eager for a solution by the end of 2010, and on the other hand, it is trying to shift responsibilities to the Greek Cypriot side for allegedly delaying the process and not working to achieve a speedy solution to the Cyprus issue.

The proposals which the President of the Republic has made, said Stephanou, if they are accepted, then they can speed up the negotiations by combining various aspects of the Cyprus issue in the discussions, just like we do on the property issue, the territorial adjustments and the issue of Turkish settlers.

At the same time, he added, with the implementation of the proposals, a new momentum can be created to achieve a solution the soonest possible.

[02] PRODUCTION - 50 YEARS OF CYPRUS REPUBLIC

Music, dance, song, poetry and multimedia blend together to paint the picture of the history of the Republic of Cyprus on October 1, fifty years after it was established.

The 90-minute show will begin in ancient times, with Cyprus rising from the seas, and a boat will take the audience on a voyage across the history of the Republic.

Stage designer Andy Partzilis, Artistic Director of the events to mark the 50th anniversary since the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, has told CNA in an interview that the grand production will be performed in Nicosia, on October 1, in the presence of President of the Republic Demetris Christofias.

He added that invitations have been sent out to heads of state and government of EU and other countries, who were the first to recognise the Republic of Cyprus in 1960.

Partzilis said that images, movement, music and song will take the audience through current efforts to reunify the island, and the first part of the show will close with a song about love and Cyprus.

At this point, President Christofias will address the audience and then the second part will begin, focusing on felling the wall dividing the island and reunification.

    [03] LIMASSOL WINE FESTIVAL

The 49th Wine Festival, held annually in the southern coastal town of Limassol, the main winegrowing region of Cyprus, will open its doors on Friday.

The Wine Festival, to last until September 5th, is hosted at the Limassol Municipal Park, as every year, with the participation of the four wineries of Limassol. Thousands of local and foreign visitors are expected to enjoy the festival.

The Wine Festival will be officially opened by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism Antonis Pashalides.

To mark the opening of the festival, a wagon will travel around Cyprus carrying men dressed in traditional costume offering wine.

Throughout the years, the Limassol Wine Festival has become a traditional feast, very popular among the local population as well as tourists. The Festivals trademark is a 7-metre statue of a man dressed in the Cypriot traditional costume vraka . Above the statue is written the motto Drink wine to live long.
