The President of the Republic Demetris Christofias will open the four-day conference of Cypriots abroad, who gather here every year to discuss developments in the Cyprus problem and other issues that concern them.

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, in a message to be read at the meeting, says that the United States believes that the process to solve the Cyprus problem is a difficult one and calls for hard work and compromise on both sides, and a comprehensive solution will require tough decisions.

According to reliable sources, in the message she notes that the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus must remain focused during the complicated negotiations and assures that Cyprus is an important partner and friend of the United States.

She is also expected to affirm US commitment to peace and security in Cyprus and to point out that it is up to the leaders of the Greek Cypriot community from around the world to support the process and the tough decisions that will be required for a comprehensive solution.

Clinton will also point out that reunification of the island is in the best interests of not only the people of Cyprus but the region and it could set an example for the international community as well, the same sources suggest.

During the conference, delegates from Europe, the US and elsewhere will be briefed by the islands political and religious leadership.

The opening ceremony of the 23rd Conference of the Executive Councils of the World Federation for Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and of the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), and the 5th Annual Conference of the World Organisation for Young Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK) will be transmitted live for the first time through the website of the Foreign Ministry.

It will be addressed by the House President Marios Garoyan, the Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Kyprianou, the Presidents of POMAK, PSEKA, and NEPOMAK Haris Sophoclides, Philip Christopher and Christos Karaolis respectively, the President of the World Council of Hellenes (SAE) Stefanos Tamvakis, and the President of Cyprus Youth Board Andreas Vyras.

During the conference, representatives of several Ministries will brief delegates on issues that concern them. Presidential Commissioner Giorgos Iacovou, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, Vice President of the Committee of Cyprus Occupied Municipalities, Mayor of the Turkish occupied town of Morfou Charalambos Pittas and President of AHEPA Nicholas Karacostas will also deliver speeches during the conference.

On Saturday a joint press conference will be held by the presidents of POMAK, PSEKA and NEPOMAK.

On Wednesday, President Christofias and his spouse Elsi will host a reception at the Presidential Palace, in honour of the delegates to the conference.

This years meeting takes place as the ongoing UN-led negotiations between President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu are set to continue on August 31st after a short two-week recess. The objective of the talks is to find a negotiated settlement, acceptable to both communities, based on past agreements, which provide for a bizonal bicommunal federation.
