  • [01] LEADERS - MEETING

President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu will hold their last meeting before the summer break on Tuesday, in the framework of the direct negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus issue.

The meeting will start at 1000 local time in the UN Protected Area of Nicosia and the leaders are expected to resume discussion on the property issue.

The UN Secretary Generals Special Advisor on Cyprus Alexander Downer will be present at Tuesday`s meeting.

Peace talks began in September 2008 between President Christofias and former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Talks continue now with Eroglu, who succeeded Talat in April this year.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.

    [02] CRR - FAMAGUSTA

Chairman of the Council for Reconstruction and Resettlement (CRR) Nicos Mesarites has said that the Council is ready whenever Famagusta is returned to its lawful inhabitants to reconstruct it.

In statements to CNA, Mesarites said that we have drafted a plan which describes the services and the persons in hierarchy of the services who will have to take action and the role that everyone will have and the raw materials which are needed.

He added that plans have been made regarding the actions to be taken in Famagusta during the first three months, providing for taking over control and the possibility of launching works in the town.

As he said, the state will have to take control of the town, facilitate access, evaluate the constructions, secure the citizens security and establish state services on the ground.

    [03] CYPRUS - MOSCOW - FIRES - SITUATION

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus is monitoring daily the situation in Moscow following the Russian wildfires outside the capital, causing thick acrid smog to blanket the city, but does not deem necessary to issue a travel advisory.

The Foreign Ministry told CNA that it is ``monitoring the situation daily with the recent fires in Russia and the choking situation in the Moscow atmosphere and it does not advise, at the moment, removing the employees of the Cypriot Embassy in the capital or the Cypriots in the areať.

According to Vassilis Polemitis, Deputy Head of Mission and First Secretary of the Cyprus Embassy in Moscow, weather conditions in Moscow have noticeably improved and the atmosphere is expected to improve in the Russian capital, noting that the Embassy is ready to provide help to anyone if necessary.

He told CNA that the temperature in Moscow has dropped to 20 C. The previous days` temperatures rose to unprecedented high levels but the atmosphere is expected to clear rapidly, he added.

Acknowledging that the situation over the past few days was unbearable, Polemitis said that fortunately there were no unpleasant incidents at the Embassy or among the staff or any Cypriots working and living in Moscow.
