  • [01] APOSTOLIC NUNCIO - POPE`S VISIT TO CYPRUS

Pope Benedict XVI is not coming to Cyprus to endanger the life of anybody or to create problems but to meet his people, said here Tuesday Archbishop Antonio Franco, Apostolic Nuncio of the Vatican, based in Jerusalem.

Speaking after being received by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, the Archbishop said the ``the visit of the Pope is, first of all, a pilgrimage on the footsteps of St. Paul, then the visit to the community of the faithful, and there is also a dimension for the Middle East because on the Mass on Sunday, he is giving what we call a document that will be the basis, the instrument of the Synod of the bishops on the Middle East, that will be held in Rome in October. So there are those dimensions``.

He said the people will be pleased with the visit of the Holy Father and expressed certainty that just as it has ``happened in Malta recently, in Portugal also and here in Cyprus, there will be closeness and this feeling of joy because for the Catholics, it is the visit of the head of the church, visiting his family``.

[02] AHI PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM

President of the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) Alecos Charalambides said on Tuesday that there are opportunities that could be taken in the USA in order to keep the Cyprus problem at the forefront.

Speaking after a meeting with Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives Averof Neophytou, Charalambides noted the importance of such meetings, adding that they contribute to efforts made by AHI to keep the Cyprus problem alive in the USA.

    [03] GREEK-AMERICAN LEADERSHIP CONGRESS - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The Cyprus problem will dominate the national issues to be promoted during discussions with members of the US administration and the Congress by the delegates to the 26th congress of the Greek-American leadership, to be held in Washington from May 25 to 27.

Other issues to be raised will be Greco-Turkish relations, the Macedonian question, and the human rights and religious freedoms of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

The congress will be attended by Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, and the Mayors of the Turkish occupied municipalities of Famagusta and Lefkoniko, Alexis Galanos and Michalis Pilikos respectively.
