[01] PRESIDENT UNSG MEETINGPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias had a half an hour meeting on Saturday with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) being held in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago .According to an official announcement, President Christofias briefed the UN Secretary General about the latest developments in the UN led direct negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem. Christofias told the UNSG that the progress has been achieved so far at the negotiations is not the one expected by the Greek Cypriot side due to the claims put forward by the Turkish Cypriot side, which are not in line with the agreed basis between the two sides for a solution as well as with the UN resolutions and EU principles and values. As it is noted, President Christofias reaffirmed his commitment towards a solution of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality, as defined in the relevant resolutions of the Security Council. He also stressed that the solution must be based on the principles of the international law and the UN resolutions for Cyprus. Ban Ki-moon expressed his appreciation for the commitment and efforts undertaken by the President of the Republic in order to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem. During the meeting, they also discussed climate change issues in view of the forthcoming Copenhagen Summit, while President Christofias informed UN Secretary General that he would participate in the Summit. Meanwhile, in his intervention during an open debate conducted yesterday by the Commonwealth Heads of Government on issues concerning youth, President Christofias referred, inter alia, to the problems faced by young people today. He pointed out that a great effort is taking place right now in Cyprus leading in two directions. We are trying to infuse into youth the idea of rapprochement and the values of tolerating each other, love for the common homeland of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots and participation in the strive against the Turkish occupation in order to reunite the island``, he added. At the same time, he concluded, with the educational reform currently underway, we precisely seek to restore the aforementioned values and to edify young people with critical mind in order to address those factors responsible for youths anti-social behavior. [02] HOUSE PRESIDENT BRITISH BASESPresident of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has spoken about half measures on behalf of Britain commenting on information broadcasted by the state television here according to which Britain gradually degrades its military base at Dhekelia, on the island`s south-east coast.In statements after a ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the temporary house of ``Digenis Akritas Morphou`` association here, Garoyian said that our positions on the issue of the British bases are known and we have repeated them many times in the past. These are half measures. They are not enough, he pointed out, adding that the issue of British bases must be regulated within the framework of a solution of the Cyprus problem.
