[01] PRESIDENT - FM - COMMONWEALTH - MEETINGSPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias attended the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) being held in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago , between 27 and 29 November 2009.According to an official announcement issued here, the Meeting was opened by Queen Elizabeth and addressed by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Patrick Manning and the Commonwealth General Secretary Kamalesh Sharma. On the sidelines of the Meeting, President Christofias held private meetings with President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato `Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, the Prime Minister of Samoa Islands Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sa `ilele Malielegaoi and Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh. He also met the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Michael Rudd and Foreign Minister of Nigeria, Ojo Maduekwe. Cyprus President had also the opportunity to meet Queen Elizabeth, during a reception given to new state and government leaders who were elected following the last meeting of Commonwealth Heads of Government in 2007. According to the announcement Christofias briefed the Queen on the Cyprus issue and exchanged views with her on various issues, including climate change issue. Moreover, an official announcement says that Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou, who participates in Commonwealth Foreign Ministers` Meeting, being held in Port of Spain, had Friday private meetings with Foreign Ministers from Commonwealth Countries. In particular, Kyprianou met Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, Foreign Minister of New Zealand Murray McCully, FM of Canada Lawrence Cannon, FM of Nigeria, Ojo Maduekwe, Foreign Minister of Lesotho Mohlabi Tsekoa, and his counterpart of South Africa Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.
